Renewing the TIE in 2026
The TIE is not permanent. Its validity is linked to the residence authorisation behind it. When that authorisation expires, the card must be renewed. Here are the deadlines, documents and updated fees following the new Immigration Regulations (RD 1155/2024).
When should you renew?
The renewal window is from 60 days before expiry to 90 days after. If you apply within this window, your authorisation is automatically extended while the renewal is being processed. This means you remain in legal status, can work and keep your Social Security registration.
What happens if you miss the deadline?
If you let more than 90 days pass after expiry, you risk:
- Losing your residence authorisation entirely.
- A fine of between €500 and €1,000 for an administrative infraction.
- Having to start the immigration process from scratch.
Documents for TIE renewal
- Valid passport (original and copy).
- Current TIE (copy of both sides).
- Completed EX-17 form.
- Recent passport-size photo.
- Updated registration certificate (if you changed address).
- Proof of payment of fee 790 code 012.
- Documentation specific to your authorisation type: current employment contract, enrolment, health insurance, proof of financial means, etc.

- Temporary residence: €19.30.
- Long-term residence: €21.87.
- EU long-term residence: €21.87.
Online renewal via Mercurio
Under the new Immigration Regulations, renewal applications can be submitted online through the Mercurio platform (electronic portal). You need a digital certificate or Cl@ve. The process is faster because it avoids a visit to the office for the application itself (although fingerprinting is still in person).
