TIE for digital nomads in Spain
Since Law 28/2022 (Startup Law) came into force, Spain offers a specific visa for international remote workers. If you obtain it, you must apply for the TIE within one month of your arrival.
Specific requirements for the digital nomad visa
Before applying for the TIE, you must have obtained the digital nomad visa. The requirements are:
- Minimum income: 200% of the SMI (Salario Mínimo Interprofesional). In 2026, this is approximately €2,700/month gross.
- Employment or professional relationship: employment contract with a non-Spanish company (or freelance activity for clients outside Spain). The company cannot be based in Spain.
- Seniority: at least 1 year of employment or professional relationship with the current company or clients.
- Health insurance: full health coverage in Spain, with no co-payments or exclusions.
- Criminal record: certificate from your home country and from countries where you have lived in the last 5 years.
From visa to TIE: the process
Once in Spain with your digital nomad visa:
- Register at the town hall (empadronamiento) in your municipality of residence.
- Gather the documentation: passport, favourable resolution, registration, EX-17, photo and fee 790 code 012.
- Book a fingerprinting appointment at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es.
- Attend the appointment with all documentation. They will take your fingerprints, photo and signature.
- Collect the TIE in 30-45 days.
Duration and renewal
The digital nomad residence authorisation lasts up to 3 years initially, and is renewable. The TIE will reflect these dates. When renewing, you must prove you still meet the requirements: income, contract and health insurance.
