NIE for Foreigners in Spain: What It Is, How to Obtain It, and What It Is For

If you are a foreigner and want to buy a property, open a company, hire insurance, or carry out any economic procedure in Spain, you will need a NIE (Foreigner's Identification Number). It is the tax identification document assigned to you by the Spanish State and that will accompany you in all your procedures in the country.

What Is the NIE?

The NIE is a unique, personal, and permanent number assigned by the Ministry of the Interior to foreign citizens with interests in Spain. It has the format: letter-7 digits-letter (for example: X-1234567-A). Unlike the DNI of Spanish citizens, the NIE is not an identity document in itself, but a tax identification number. It serves to identify you before the Tax Agency and to register all your economic operations in Spain.

What Do You Need the NIE For?

  • To buy or sell a property in Spain.
  • To incorporate a company or be a director of a Spanish company.
  • To sign contracts for lease, services, or employment.
  • To open a bank account in a Spanish financial institution.
  • To pay taxes in Spain (IRNR, ITP, VAT, etc.).
  • To grant or receive notarial powers of attorney with effects in Spain.

How to Apply for the NIE?

From Spain

You must go in person to a Police Station with a foreign affairs unit. You need:
  • Original passport and photocopy.
  • Completed Form EX-15.
  • Justification of the economic, labor, or social reason that proves the need for the NIE.
  • Payment of the fee 012.

From Abroad

You can apply for it at the Spanish consulate or embassy in your country of residence. The process is the same, although the timelines may vary.

Through a Representative (Notarial Power of Attorney)

If you cannot travel to the consulate or to Spain, you can grant a notarial power of attorney to a representative to process the NIE on your behalf. At Notaría Online, we manage the notarial power of attorney electronically and connect you with a manager in Spain for the entire process.

How Long Does It Take?

The timeframe varies depending on the method chosen:
  • In person in Spain: between 1 and 5 business days.
  • Via consulate: between 1 and 4 weeks, depending on the consulate.
  • Through a representative: similar to the in-person process once the power of attorney is granted.

NIE and Property Purchase: When to Request It?

It is ideal to request the NIE before signing the earnest money contract, as you will need it for the notarial deed. If your purchase process is very advanced, it can be managed urgently with the help of a management agency. At Notaría Online, we help you obtain the NIE and manage all the procedures for your purchase and sale without you having to come to Spain. Contact us today.
