Working in Spain as an EU citizen
As an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, you have the right to work in Spain on the same terms as a Spanish national. You do not need a work permit. But if you are going to reside for more than 3 months, you do need the EU Citizen Registration Certificate.
Employed work
If you have an employment contract with a Spanish company, the requirements for the registration certificate are the simplest:
- Registered employment contract.
- Social Security registration (your employer handles this).
- EX-18 form, passport/ID, registration and fee 790.
You do not need to prove additional financial means or take out private insurance. Social Security covers you from your first day of registration.
Self-employed work
- Registration with Hacienda via form 036 or 037.
- RETA (self-employed Social Security) registration.
- EX-18 form, passport/ID, registration and fee 790.
No private insurance or financial means proof needed.
The NIE: the first thing you need
Before registering with Social Security or Hacienda, you need an NIE. It is your tax identification number in Spain. If you need the NIE urgently to sign a contract, check our NIE Online service.
If you need certified copies of documents, contact Notaría Online.
